We’ve had another busy month! We launched a new STEAM Club with a great group of kids who learned about the difference between chemical and physical changes by making slime in their very first meeting. It was educational and messy and FUN!
We also continue to match adult mentors with high school mentees. Our next Mentor training is March 2nd; contact me for more information or register here. And if you know a young adult who might need a mentor, we’d love to help.
And don’t miss our Volunteer of the Month, Kelly Haneklau! I could not be more thankful for Kelly and her steadfast support of our mission!
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Each month, we recognize a volunteer who goes above and beyond to empower kids with the tools they need to succeed in the 21st century.
Meet Kelly Haneklau!
Kelly is a professional fine artist and the owner of Minor Miracles, an art studio in Prince William County, VA. She has supported the Kuma Foundation in many ways, from donating to and delivering for our food delivery/ Safe Learning Environment Program, to creating content for our Career Exploration Program, to teaching art in our Elementary STEAM Club. We are so lucky to have Kelly on the Kuma Foundation team!
PROGRAM OF THE MONTH
Each month we spotlight a different Kuma Foundation Program.
Elementary Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) Program
We believe that all kids deserve a high-tech future, but low-income students lack access to STEAM exposure, education, and enrichment, severely limiting their ability to compete in a 21st century workforce. In fact, the science and mathematics achievement gaps along socioeconomic lines have widened substantially in the last 20 years. But we can narrow that gap. Evidence shows that participation in STEAM-focused programs leads to significant, positive changes in students’ attitudes and outcomes. That’s why we offer free STEAM Clubs to low-income and underrepresented students.
